A Brief History of Reflexology

Reflexology is as old as man.  In the beginning man walked barefoot and doing so massaged the more than 7,000 nerve endings in the feet naturally.  This helped man to correct imbalances in the body and helped to maintain good health.  There is documentation that reflexology has been used in healing for over 3,000 years.

In 1913, Dr. William Fitzgerald started his studies of zone therapy, eventually tracing the locations and describing the ten longitudinal zones.  He traced these zones into five meridian lines or energy channels on each side of the body.  The publication entitled Zone Therapy was published by Dr. Edwin Bowers who had worked with Dr. Fitzgerald.

Eunice Ingham pioneered reflexology work and devised one of the first foot charts on reflexology.  Her nephew, Dwight Byers was treated by her for asthma using reflexology.  He believes in reflexology to this day and is the President of the International Institute of Reflexology in Florida.

Doreen Bayly took reflexology to Great Britain in 1966 after meeting Eunice Ingham in America.   She became a reflexologist and opened her own school, that is still thriving today even after her death in 1979.

Reflexology today is becoming one of the most sought after alternative therapies.
